Is Being Authentic & Transparent on Your Biz Blog Bad for Entrepreneurial PR?
Recently there was a discussion in one of my business organization forums. The gist was whether or not sharing personal tid-bits of information on your business blog is acceptable. Some were for it; others against.
Here’s my take:
We’re all human beings with feelings, families, interests outside of our businesses right?
To be truly whole and fulfilled I believe we need to be well-rounded people. And as well-rounded people and entrepreneurs, we can be more buzz-worthy. It takes a leap of faith to share our true selves and come out from behind that curtain of who we think we should be. I, for one, at the age of 30 have decided there will be no more hiding; no more pretending I have to be someone I’m not (I’m more comfortable in my exercise gear than a suit, but that doesn’t mean I can’t rock my clients’ PR & editorial needs).
Editors don’t always want to hear the dry, boring story of another certification obtained or another service offering. They want juicy, well thought out stories. And at times, your personal tid-bits may be the fuel to light the fire of creating positive buzz around you AND your business.
So consider this:
What do you have to lose by sharing tid-bits of your personal life on your biz blog? I’m not talking about sharing the new recipe you got the other day or what your kids did at day care, unless of course you can tie that into your line of business. Isn’t it more human and honest to be real?
What’s your take – to share or not to share the personal tid-bits?
We’re teaming up to help fill kids back packs…
Every now and then as business owners and citizens we have the opportunity to give back to our communities. I’ve been area manager for my local Moxie Moms chapter for several months now and part of what we do as a group is give back our time or resources to support the community.
I recently found Cradles to Crayons and took a tour of their warehouse. They help Philadelphia area children and families in many aspects. After touring their warehouse, I wanted to find a way to marry Moxie Moms Gives Back program with their needs…and it just so happens that each year they hold a program called “Ready for School” where items are collected to fill back packs (or individuals and businesses can sponsor for $15 which fills 1 back pack).
More information on our Cradles to Crayons co-sponsored drive:
Monday, July 13th and Wednesday, July 15th, my local Moxie Moms chapter will be collecting items at Jules Thin Crust Pizza in Jenkintown for Cradles to Crayons located in Horsham, PA. This co-sponsored drive is to help Cradles to Crayons with their dual mission “to distribute basic essentials to children living in poverty so that they are safe, warm, ready to learn and feel valued, and to set a foundation for lasting change by providing meaningful, tangible volunteer opportunities to thousands of youth and adults each year.”
We will be collecting the following items:
- #2 pencils
- Pencil boxes/cases
- Pencil sharpeners
- Erasers
- Blue and black pens
- Pocket folders
- Composition books
- 24-packs of crayons
- Washable markers
- Colored pencils
- Glue sticks
- Rulers
- Calculators
- Or a child can be sponsored for $15 (fills one back pack)
Cradles to Crayons model “builds partnerships with social service agencies, allowing us to serve as a bridge between communities that have and communities that need. We make it simple for adults and children, individually or with schools, corporations or other organizations, to give of their time, their treasures and their talent to help children in need in their communities.” Moxie Moms (http://www.moxie-moms.com/easternmoco) and Innovate Services (http://www.InnovateServices.com) are thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with an organization that provides support to communities and children in need. Moxie Moms goal is to help moms be the best mothers they can be while giving them an outlet for developing friendships, an improved level of fitness and a network of support new moms need. Part of Moxie Moms’ and Innovate Services’ goal is to help support the community however we can, and partnering with Cradles to Crayons to help kids in need goes hand in hand with what we’re all about.

Healthy Body = Healthy Mind = Healthy Business
Yeah, but I have a to-do list a mile long for myself…and for my clients.
I hear ya. I get truly get it. We all have numerous demands placed on us by clients, our businesses, ourselves and others…especially if we’re parents or caregivers for others. And don’t get me started on the whole women saying “yes” too often topic or the fact that mothers don’t catch a break. It’s true, you know it!
What if we were to fall ill ourselves or worse our life cut too short as a direct result of lack of self care? Who would all those people rely on then? Don’t get me wrong I know there are numerous risks, diseases, and other things out there in our universe we just can’t control. But we have more control over our life and our bodies than we think. Don’t we owe it to ourselves and those around us to do our best to be there for the long haul? My bet is that the more positive self-care we infuse into our daily lives, the more efficient, healthy and productive our businesses will be. The simple equation is:
Healthy Body = Healthy Mind = Healthy Business
Could Positive Self-Care Lead You To Your Ideal Clients?
I believe wholeheartedly that the better we take care of ourselves, the more respect we have for our bodies, the more confidence we will have. And yes, this can lead you to your ideal clients. Why? Because when you value your time, make an appointment with yourself or your workout buddy to exercise, even just a 10 minute walk every day can improve your outlook immensely. And when you’re on top, no one can get you down. When you’re at the top of your game, living authentically, being true to yourself and giving yourself the time you need to refuel your confidence shines.
How do you infuse fitness into your business?
Do you have daily or weekly tricks for inserting positive self-care into your life?

Professional Virtual Assistants – Does PR Have a Role in Your Business?
Recently I’ve been toying with the idea of developing something (product…book…seminar) that would help promote the use of authentic, simplified Public Relations in business; especially for the virtual assistant / virtual professional industry.
Over the years, I’ve seen many a company (large and small) throw money into fruitless advertising campaigns that didn’t fully communicate the voice and philosophy behind the company. Sure there is a time and place for advertising, but you cannot put all your eggs in one basket and expect the leads to flow in. And it is so easy to choose advertising over developing a sound public relations and grass roots plan because it can be less time consuming.
With public relations you have to answer at minimum the “who, what, why, when, where” questions readers, editors and other media contacts will be asking. But that is not enough. You have to delve into what your ideal clientele or target market want to hear. What is their interest these days? How does your news tie into their needs or wants? What does your philanthropic act have to do with them? Why would someone want to read about your new joint venture, e-book, certification, etc. It takes a lot of thought, creativity and putting yourself in others shoes to develop a strong PR plan.
So virtual assistants / virtual professionals inquiring minds want to know…
Does PR have a role in your business?
